Scope and Contents This collection of 85 hand-tinted lantern slides advertised The Alaska Railroad's Tour #2 in the first year of operation for the Alaska Railroad, 1923. The slides are imprinted with “Alaska Railroad, Washington D.C.” The tour starts at the Alaska Steamship’s pier in Seattle and continues up through the Inside Passage to Seward by steamship. These records primarily include scrapbooks of newspaper clippings describing the work of the U.S. Alaska Road Commission, 1915-1921 and U.S. Bureau of Public Roads, 1963-1974.

Includes miscellaneous records concerning the Savage Bridge Project in Mt.McKinley National Park (1950's-1960's); earthquake damage to the highway system in 1964; several project engineer field diaries for the Starrigavan Bay Crossing, Sitka Highway.

Content Description The inventory lists locations and general subject areas contained in each volume but individual photographs are only described for Vol. 139. The lantern slides (Vol. 107B) depict the construction of the Alaska Highway. 100, 35mm color slides (Vol. 40) were taken during the opening of Haines Highway and also include miscellaneous highway scenes from Circle to Homer. This collection contains photos primarily of Southeast Alaska villages and people from around 1900. Many are photos taken by photographers Case and Draper, Edward De Groff, and Vincent I. Soboleff.

The 64 slides in this collection were taken during the 1970s and depict locations in Southeast Alaska and the Yukon. Most of the slides are commercially produced and are part of a series depicting “The Inside Passage.” Subjects range from fishing to specific locations such as glaciers, Baranoff[Baranof] Warm Springs, and Carcross, Skagway, Juneau, and Chatham Strait.

Content Description

The 35 mm transparencies (color and black and white) in this collection represent art pieces purchased by the State of Alaska from 1975-1983. No slides have been received since 1983.

An exhibit catalog entitled Collection describes the artwork purchased from 1975-1980. An additional list is included of acquisitions added after the publication, until 1982.

Resumes of the artists represented are filed at the beginning of the collection.

Scope and Contents This collection is part of the Alaska State Housing Authority (ASHA) planning library. It includes city planning studies, surveys, brochures, maps and other material produced by or for municipalities and other collected data on them used by ASHA in their work. The community file is arranged alphabetically by names of Alaskan communities. Several communities such as Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Sitka had extensive files so cross references reflect which boxes are devoted to those communities....

Content Description

Contains photographs, aerial photographs, negatives and slides of housing and housing construction activities in various communities and villages, construction workers, and residents. Black and white as well as color images are included. Some of the homes and people are identified. ASHA slideshow with script shows the changes to Alaska rural life, various impacts on Alaska rural living and the need for planning (1970).
